NEWPORT TRANSPORT REPORT PRELIMINARY STUDY OF RI 2394 FOR 2020-2023
This report presents the results of the 2020 and 2021 Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) field and dredge spoil studies of RI 2394, an 18th -century shipwreck site in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island. The study was done under permits to RIMAP from the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission (HPHC) that allowed limited excavations of structural features that might lead to the ship's identification as Capt. Cook's Endeavour Bark. This vessel, renamed the Lord Sandwich, was among those scuttled in Newport Harbor in 1778. Although Endeavour's identification is of special interest, RIMAP's study of RI 2394 is part of its ongoing study of all the 1778 fleet, and how the history of these ships, including the Lord Sandwich, helps to explain the British loss and the Colonial success in the American Revolution
